Well, the advice I received from the forum on stripping my plastic Lionel Diesel worked great. Simple Green did wonders. I picked out a Rustoleum color that has no primer included. Should I prime the plastic shell separately or will the paint stick well enough without primer? Can I use a matte clear coat over the primary paint job after 2 weeks drying or will it alligator my paint? I plan on using water based decals to replace the markings before the clear coat. Will the chemicals in clear coat affect and curl the decals? Thank you for an help and advice, I appreciate it.
Well done, you’re on your way! My advice is this:
If that Rustoleum paint has no primer in it I’d prime the shell before you apply it, better safe than sorry. Once you’ve got the primer on you shouldn’t need to do anything else, go ahead and apply the primary coat. Orange, wasn’t it?
There should be no problem with applying the decals straight to the primary color paint. Once the decals are dry the clear coat shouldn’t affect them at all.
As far as clear coats are concerned I use Tamiya’s. How it’s going to react with Rustoleum I don’t know. I wouldn’t expect any problems but you may want to set up a test article using your primary color and then spraying it with the clear coat just to see what happens.
Personally I like to use the same brand of paint for all applications “just in case” and if Rustoleum makes a clear coat I say use that.
Thanks Flint, I would use Rustoleum matte on the orange. Good idea. I will paint a test piece and see if the clear coat has any damaging affect.
