My wife and I are interested in building a model HO train layout. I would like to use code 100 nickel silver track. I have a couple of questions for you veteran modelers. I would like to know what brand of track works best, Atlas or Walthers, etc., and which switches work best. Also I’m interested in using a Digitrax System for the track power. I would like to hear from some of your readers on what they are using and where to purchase these items at a fair price. Thank you, Kevin and Linda, Central Ohio
I’m sure everyone has their favorite online stores; MB Kline, aka Model Train Stuff has some of the best prices I have found on Atlas track, as does Youngwood Model RR Supply is also inexpensive and good to work with (buy direct rather than off the Walther’s web site). There are others.
The DigitTrax Zephyr makes a good starting system for DCC (check Youngwood for pricing). If you need to compare components, Tony’s Train Exchange has lot’s of good information.
As to switches, there have been several discussion threads on that recently, do a search.

PS - good planning up front is the key to having fun later on.
Thanks for the quick reply! I will check out the sources you mentioned and do a search. Kevin
Track
There is not really a “best”. Most of them on the market today are very reliable, and that is what you want. You are asking about code 100 track. That is an old standard. Code 83 is the new norm for HO scale track and that is what I think you should go with. On my current layout I am mixing Atlas, Peco, and Micro Engineering track. I like Peco and Micro Engineering the best. But they are different. Peco is easy to use because it is more flexible. Micro Engineering has its place but is not as easy to work with. However it will stay in one position once formed where Peco will want to straighten out until glued down.
Turnouts
I am using Atlas and Peco. Peco is the better, and you won’t have to install switch machines right away. It has an over-center spring that keeps it in the position you set it.
Because you have posted your question here, you are going to get a few opinions. Since you and your wife are just starting out, I would suggest that you take these opinions and invest in a few sections of the different brands of track and maybe one of each brand of turnout. Then you will be able to see which one you like best.
If you are considering Peco turnouts, get the Insulfrog model, it’s DCC friendly, although there are a couple of things you could do to make it “better”.
