Quick...what is it?

Carl,

Let them guess a little while first!

Oh, and what is it’s primary cargo…

(sorry for the quality, it was 5:30 am, thats the setting moon light and the yard lights for lighting)

It is a heavy load wagon, for transformers and motor stators and similar.

The load is bolted between the arms at each side, here just connected together.

I assume it belongs to ABB given the logo.

Is it a “Schnabel?”

M636C

Well, I think that ABB is an electric equip. manufacturer, and this thing is obviously designed to carry a little weight…so…

How about some sort of transport for very large transformers. Those things are solid hunks of metal and get pretty heavy…

A Schnable(?) car, designed to carry heavy mining equipment?

Me thinks it is a Schnable car. I’ve seen examples of the same thing before, both in the real thing and in HO scale.

It’s one of those Swedish track straighteners - also good for expanding tight clearances:)

Looks to me like a Schnabel car.

Electric transformers

Schanbel type car

And if I get a chance to photograph it loaded, I will post it here on the thread.

CHECK THIS SITE: http://www.garlic.com/~tomd/? Looks like old Westinghouse WECX 202 now owned by ABB

Ed, are you sure you can take good photographs if you are drunk?[;)]

Hmmmm, must have misread that,I thought the car was Loaded, not Ed!![swg]

Now THAT is the photo I want to see - [(-D]

Absolutely…I can even sing really, really good too…or at least really, really loud….In fact, about half way through a bottle of Sky Vodka, I can do things with a Jeep that even impresses the wrecker drivers!

Didn’t impress my insurance agent too much though….[;)]

…Perhaps that very car may have been right here in Muncie in the past. A mamoth Westinghouse plant was built here right before 1960 to manufacture hugh electric transformers and those cars {for years}, hauled transformers out of here.

Later the plant became an ABB plant and of course the same product manufactured.

Now, and for some years the plant has set unused. It has been for sale and several times it seemed it might have had a buyer but not sure if a complete deal has ever been closed yet. The plant is hugh. Center section is about 100 ft. in height inside with 300 ton cranes, etc…

So the special Schnable railroad cars have been here quite often.

Well,

Yup, it is a Schnable car, and as Modelcar and Antigates, along with a few others pointed out, it hauls transformers.

In fact, the body of the transformer becomes the center “part” of the car, special built to each other.
