Quieting the Tsunami

I have a Bachmann S. Consolidated with Tsunami sound and I’m trying to figure out how, other than using the mute button, I get the sound to come on ONLY when the engine is selected on a throttle. As it is now the sound comes on when track power is turned on regardless of whether the engine is selected. I have many other sound engines, Atlas… QSI etc., and none of them do this except when selected on a throttle. Then the sound comes on. Is there a certain CV that I need to set to some value? I know about the ‘Quiet’ mode, setting CV 113 (if memory serves me), but I think that only quiets the engine until a non 0 speed is selected. Is that the only method of quieting a Tsunami other than the mute?

IF it becomes annoying enough, a hammer works wonders.

I have one of those, but I have a soundtrax. It eventually quiets down, but if you have even a momemtary short it perks up again. If you park it in a consistant place, you could gap and kill that track with a toggle. In real life though, they have to keep pressure up if they are going to be used.

Maybe you could turn down the idle volume?

I have the same loco and I think quiet mode is what you want. I don’t have the doc in front of me but I think you need to set a CV for a length of time for for the loco to go quiet after it is no longer selected. It didn’t seem to work as I thought, it took much longer than I set the time for, but it did eventually work.

Chip, I tried the hammer technique but the Bachmann was too tough!

I have not bothered to check this matter out, Jarrell, but I have occasionally noticed that when I run a session, and then power down at the end of it without ever having engaged the Tsunami decoders, wherever they are resident, they will sometimes not make sounds on subsequent sessions until I engage them on the throttle for the first time. The QSI’s are the same. I wonder why my Lionel Challenger is not pumping, then dial in its address…then up it comes as before.

I just mute all the Sountraxx decoders when I start a session if it doesn’t involve them. It takes a minute, but that is all. As stated earlier, a shut-down for whatever reason, short of running to the phone, will restore them all again.

If you get to the magic information, would you be kind enough to report your findings for us?

Thanks Crandell. I think I may try the Soundtrax forum on Yahoo and see what they say. Probably the simplest thing is to just mute the sucker and let it be.

Download the Tsunami Technical Reference Manual from here and read through it. This document lists all of the Tsunami CVs.

It’s in Adobe Acrobat Reader .PDF format, so you’ll need to download that, too, if you don’t already have it.

Jarrell,

The following is from page 48 in the Tsunami Users Guide:

Tsunami’s Quiet Mode is used to turn the sound on only after the decoder is placed into service. It will also automatically turn the sound effects off when the decoder is not being used. This is particularly useful when you have a large number of sound equipped engines on your layout and don’t wish to have them turn on all at once!

To activate the Quiet Mode, simply program CV 113 to any non-zero value between 1 and 255. This value sets the amount of time in tenth second increments, that the decoder will wait before it turns the audio off. Thus, a setting of 120 corresponds to 12.0 seconds.

When the Quiet Mode is active, the decoder will remain quiet when it is first powered up and then automatically turn on the audio whenever it receives a non-zero speed command or any function is turned on (except Mute). It will automatically mute the audio when the locomotive speed is returned to zero, all functions are turned off and the time set in CV 113 has elapsed.

Setting CV 113 to 0 disables this feature and the sounds will turn on immediately when the decoder is powered up and remain turned on for the duration of the operating session.

So setting CV 113 to a high value like 250 will have the Tsunami quiet when first powered up, make sounds while operating, and then continue to make sounds for 25 seconds after changing the speed to zero.
