If it was cut up for scrap that should be; Rest in Pieces

What the . . . !

I think I have totally lost my train-identification abilities. Maybe its time for me to hang up my camera, close my trains magazines, and stop spewing drivel on the forum.

The photo identifies the locomotive as an SD-45T? I would have almost certainly put it as an SD-40-2, non-T. I am so lost.

Gabe

P.S. Also, since when did retirement = cutter’s torch. Perhaps she will be coming to a short line or regional near you?

My book says it is an ex Seaboard SD45-2 built in 1972.

So the SD-45-2s don’t have the flanged ends? And aren’t tunnel motors’ intakes on the bottom?

Gabe

Gabe,
It’s a SD45-2.
Not all SD45s have the flared radiators.

Look at the body length, and the short porches both front and rear.

Ed

I think it’s a Clinchfield unit.(3607-3624)

and, and, what’s going to happen to it? or has it happened?

This might be a stupid question, but how do you know that it is going to the scrapper? To me it looks like any of the engines that are in the shop for repairs or upgrades.

Chris

Didn’t SD-40-2s have short porches in the front and rear as well until they started building them on SD-45 frames?

Thanks for the clarification Ed.

Gabe

Gabe, SD40-2s were not built on SD45 frames. SD40s and SD45s were built on the same frames while SD40-2s and SD45-2s were built on identical frames. So to answer your question, the SD40 had had shorter porches since it and the SD45 were built on a frame shorter than the Dash-2 frame.

And I dont think this one is doing 70mph, either![:D]

Ed[}:)]

Under locomotive type, this unit is listed as a SD45-2.This engine doesn’t look like it is going to scrap. It is probably in for repairs.

It just looks like some of the doors are open to access the engine and other interior parts for inspection/ servicing. Unless, you know for sure that is being retired.

hahahahahahaha, Ed, you crack me up.

according to the guy the engine is getting retired but the last time I saw it it was running fine I will e-mail and see if he REALLY KNOWS if it is getting retired but we will see in a couple of weeks.

kevin

Kevin,

Don’t get me wrong, I’m no expert on engines or anything it very well could be going to the graveyard, but I’ve seen much running out there.

An Union Pacific conductor, and railfan, once said in regard to railfan rumors, “Don’t believe anything you hear and only half of what you read.” What is the photographer’s source?

ok here is what’s wrong with 8972 it has gear train damage and CSX has decided not to fix it also the trucks and main generator will be removed next week for other locos.
