Hi all,
I have been working on an interesting structure project for my new layout. I plan to model one turn of a 1/4 mile paved oval race track with a midget race in progress. I have successfully carved several midget racer chassis from styrene stock, added suspensions, axles, wheels, exhaust pipes, intake stacks, roll hoops and number decals but find myself short of suitable driver figures. I have gone through my admittedly limited collection of figures (about 100), and cannot find a single figure that can be modified to look like a racing driver (in coveralls and helmet). I don’t want to buy a set of truck drivers where only a few are seated and a bus driver figure certainly wouldn’t look right. Wiking offers a set of 10 “Modern Convertible Drivers” but this consists of five identical male figures and five identical female figures. I could repaint the male drivers to look more like they’re wearing coveralls and the baseball caps could look like helmets if a little putty was added over the ears, but the female figures won’t work (not too many female midget drivers in the 1950’s). With modellers insisting on more accurate details all the time, I’m kind of surprised that more driver figures are not available to install in vehicles of any type.
The other problem I have is how to make steering wheels for these drivers to hold. Any ideas?
