Radio Headsets for Club Operating Sessions

Our club is currently equipped with four Realistic TRC-507 radio headsets, purchased at Radio Shack years ago. However with the conversion to DCC and with more loco’s and crews involved at the same time we’re going to need an additional four to six headsets. Since the TRC-507’s, or a compatible alternative, seem not to be available, we’re interested in what others recommend we buy.

Our club had the same problem. Over the period of about one year we were able to find 10 more sets on E-Bay. Cost was in the range of the original Radio Shack price. As with parts and anything else useful, Radio Shack as dropped them. The new Personal Communication Radios (Handi-Talkie) colud be used but lack the headset and mic.

For a while I was seeing groups of bicyclists with headsets for short-range communications. Have you looked at bike shops or outdoor goods places? I did a quick check and found this for $15, among other similar products, at REI:

(It’s all one humungous link, by the way. No spaces.)

Thanks Mr. B. The Motorola headset looks interesting. Strange they don’t show the power supply. Does anyone out there have experience with these in model railroading?

Hi there,

Take a look at the Motorola T5420. They have headsets, earpieces with mikes and remote speaker mikes available as accessories. I personally have experience with Motorola two-way radios for professional applications and can highly recommend their products [tup]. I think they will more than definitely suite your requirements at your location or at shows…
