Rail City Reaches End of Line

Rail City, located in Sandy Pond, NY, was probably the first railroad museum. It operated for several years, then after closing, a museum filled with artifacts about the facility was operated in the station.

Now that’s about to end.

Here’s the news story.

And here’s their website.

The Oswego County railroad museum is trying to get as much of the collection as it can (Rail City is/was located in Oswego County).

I recall going to Rail City, riding behind what I now know was Bath & Hammondsport #11. I know there are family movies, and I have a picture of two of my cousins, my sister and me sitting on a speeder. I wish I’d appreciated the place for what it was at the time.

Glad I went to the museum in the late 1990’s.

While it was closed before I was born, I wish I had known it was there while much of the equipment was there. I didn’t even know it existed until an article appeared in Trains in the mid 1990’s about the history of it after the auction.
