Good morning, We got a litle rain during the night! Oh well… Here is what I am wanting to do…Make a rail fence around the Fillmore estate, probley 2 or 3 rails. Does any know how to go about scratch building it.
Also where can I get scale 2x4 and 2x6 lumber? I am thinking about building a structure ‘‘under construction’’ With that scene I can have Fillmore Concrete doing something besides spending money. Mr. Fillmore is expanding his concrete plant this week. Thanks a lot. Mike
Anothet thought happened to enter my head, I hope it doesn’t get lost in the empty space, Those of you know about the Fillmore estate, what are your ideas on a brick wall instead of a white rail fence. I could make the brick match the house. If you want a pic let me know and I will post one. Thanks for the replys. Mike
Hobby lobby or Michael’s has a section of basswood and balsa wood that comes in sheets or strips that is to scale…take your NMRA steel ruler up there and measure out the scale wood you need…scratch building it is fairly simple…just cut the wood from strip balsa or basswood to lenght, measure and mark it so the boards line up, and glue it together with wood glue…then paint it and plant it on the layout…chuck
I’ve found a pile of strip wood and like stuff at Hobby Lobby. I’d imagine most hobby/craft places would have a selection available. The crafts section of our Wally World has some packets of what they call Skinny Sticks (1/4" X 3/32") and assorted sizes of square dowels in a packet. Each are priced in the buck and a half to two dollar range. I’ve found them useful for walls, tunnel portals and places where the extreme thickness isn’t obvious.
Glad you are getting a little moisture there, mikesmowers. We had heavy rain here overnight - it is still thundering at this particular moment - and its heading in your direction. Oil up them thar mowin’ machines!!!
Walthers handles Kappler, Midwest, and Northeastern - all basswood producers - who market scale lumber and have it packaged in the dimensions you specified. Evergreen and Plastruct have styrene strips and sheet material which have close dimensions.
We in N-Scale are blessed above all other creatures because a styrene strip .010 X .020 scales out to 1.6 X 3.2 inches which is only a tad larger then the 1.5 X 3 inch actual measurement of a 2 X 4!!!
Mike, you can also order direct from Kappler. They will also make scale lumber and such to customers specs if wanted. Their website is here: http://www.kapplerusa.com/y2k/kp-main.htm
You have the best information in the above posts. In addition, tooth picks make good split rail fences. You can split dried cedar to scale size with any sharp knife and a small hammer for a real prototype look. I cut all my scale wood for the trestle out of walnut with a table saw, a band saw and a micrometer. These are maybe the hard ways, but they give a slightly different result than standard styrene or basswood. What ever, I look forward to the results.
