Rail Hams.

I know there is one Frequency in the Ham band that is used for Railfans. What Frequency is it? And what are the chances of hearing something on this Frequency? Thanks,Allan.

Actually no frequency is allocated to rail hams but they do at times use 146.49, 146.44 and a 440 MHz frequency or two. All would be simplex.

Chances of hearing somebody, extremely slim.

I don’t believe that the 2 Meter band (144 to 148 Mhz) is shared with anyone, ie only ham radio in the USA, as for the 70cm band (420 to 450 Mhz) part of it is shared with governmental agencies along the Canadian boarder. And restirction apply in that area apprx. 50 miles from a line running along the boarder. I would believe that if they are using it it would be illegal and the FCC frowns on out of band usage of radio spectrum.
maybe you heard a couple of ham railroaders rag chewing on their radios, some of us out her have licences and talk sometimes. As a conductor I used to have a ham radio repeater programmed into my handheld so in case of an emergancy in the area I used to work that we could not talk to the yard with a walkie or locomotive radio. But I have a ham licence. (KE4HRX/0. end of train devices do work on the 450 Mhz band around 451.350. maybe this will help. if you do here the railroad using freqs. 144 to 148 Mhz or 420 to 450 Mhz I would call the FCC and report them with the time, date, location and freq. of out of band transmission. They and the AAR have 99 channels allotted to them (plenty) and do not need to in fringe on the Ham radio alocation!!!
