Rail historian Joe Piersen dies
Joe was some of the “glue” at the CNWHS. He was always a gentleman and he will be missed.
In addition to the books and many archives publications Joe authored, he was tireless in assisting other authors and is frequently named in credit lines in books from Morning Sun and others.
By the way there is a typo in the article – donations in Joe’s memory should be sent to Gerald L. Krug, not King, at the address listed. Jerry is the treasurer of the C&NWHS.
It was my pleasure to work with Joe on several projects. While he will certainly be missed, I am grateful for the legacy that he leaves. The C&NW Historical Society and railfans generally have and will continue to benefit from his work.
Joe will be missed indeed. I worked with him on research and donations from time to time and always felt like I learned and benefited more from him than vice versa.
God love you Joe, rest in peace.
I first met Joe when I was a Safety Mgr for C&NW and later some joint efforts with CB&Q His. Soc. nee BRHS - Joe was indeed a gentleman, friendly & polite to a fault and always anxious to have the most factual data available. To many Joe was the “face” of C&NWHS - a better rep any group could not ask for. ALL mbrs of historical groups could take a lesson from Joe - no ego, just seeking to do what’s best for the group.

A tremendous loss for the C&NWHS and the rail community in general - a fine gentleman. My sympathies and prayers for Marge and the family.
I found Joe a few years ago while doing a search for C&NW Val maps in the state of Wisconsin. He was very helpful, great to work with, and always had the mapping I needed. He will be missed.
