cut a piece rail in the gauge you are using about 3long ,use piece broomstick about 2 long drill ahole in it the smaller than the rail glue in place sharpen the other end of the rail to wedge andyou now have atool for the job
a precision pair of pliers will hold the rail joiner and allow you to install it on the rails and it only cost a few dollars at the hobby shop.
Sounds a lot better than inserting fishplates into the finger or under the nail as I have heard many times from N modellers. I hope I can find the tool in my local model shop who sells nothing but US models.
