Rail Length

Could someone please give me the typical length of rail used in the 1950’s.

39 feet. or 13 yards.

Said to come from the old days when the rails would be transported in a 40 foot gondola. 39 foot sections of rail could easily be loaded and would fit inside with little wasted space.
