The deserts are real. Desertication is the expansion of these deserts into the bordering areas that had a bit more rainfall and vegetation. The prime example of this occurrence is the expansion of the Sahara further south into areas that formerly could support herding and some farming.
Note all: The word (?) is desertIFication, the one just as bad as the other, one of those bureaucratic Amos ‘n’ Andy abominations that are creeping into the language. I was sorry to find it had made my dictionary as of 1988 already.
