Rail Sounds

Howdy all! OK so this didn’t get answered when I asked it last time with another question so I shall ask again. Where can I find fre downloadable rail sounds??

Exactly what sounds are you looking for?

There are plenty of ‘horn’ sites that have sound clips.

Broadway Limited Models and some other manufacturers have some of the sound clips used in the model sound systems available for download (although you might need to do some protocol conversion on them to listen using a different program).

I’ve found a variety of steam and diesel clips on the Web (usually starting with a Google search and changing and refining the search when I start to find interesting things)

just any rail sounds, you know runbys(diesel & steam), whistles & horns, ect.

Preferably in .wav files and good quality

Here’s a good one!

Go to www.dieselairhorns.com

On the left side of the page, click on Sound Library and Video Libraries. Really neat stuff! I’m a locomotive horn fan myself and enjoy being able to tell the differences between the variious types of horns.

Also, go to your search engine and type in FIVE CHIME HORN CONSULTANTS. Matt Donnelly also has some great sound samples.

As a modeler, I’m looking forward to Soundtraxx releasing the new “Tsunami” sound decoder in November. Supposed to be really impressive!

Hope this helps!

Here are a few to get you started (.wavs)

One of the most ‘famous’ sources is

http://www.spikesys.com/Sounds/

Another site with interesting content is

Here are component sounds from a rather interesting train simulator:

Good EMD 567 sounds … note the source!

Some variety here:

From Colorado:

From Great Britain:

Very nice (even if mono) runby of Caltrain:

An example of the model-railroad download site, with samples (some extremely good!)

http://www.phoenixsound.com/download/download.html

All these came from a Google search on “rail .wav” More directed searches for particular railroads will give you more files (I got some good ones for N&W 611 and 1218 that way)

Overmod,

Way to go! Didn’t know about those links.

Cheers!

it would have been nice, only my stupid computer didn’t play the wav files…have to work on this.

Railman: Depending on what kind of computer you have, there are some options –

Most of the time, you can go to www.microsoft.com and download a free copy of the Windows Media Player for your OS. This will render .wav files quite nicely.

There is also a selection of free and pay utilities that can convert these files into other formats. I use QuickTime Pro on Mac OS X, but there are plenty of other choices. While I can’t give you specific info on Linux (or other xNIX flavors) I think there are open-source converters for just about any desired format.

I’m assuming that your computer either has a soundcard in it, or has a port that can be used to connect it to something with speakers or a headphone connection. If not, e-mail me and I can advise you about what you might need and how to set it up, if you don’t feel up to doing it yourself (in almost all cases, it isn’t that hard).
