You see a CSX locomotive crossing one of those ultra high Viaducts like you find in Pennsylvania, the appalachian South east, and some parts of the west.
Seems like I’ve even seen pictures of these big spans looming over occupied residential neighborhoods in parts of Pennsylvania.
And, unfortunately, rail wrecks happen.
Anyone know of any train wrecks that involved trains falling from these uber tall spans? Pictures?
I am pretty sure there hasnt been. If it ever had, or did happen, you will know. Every freakin TV news talking head will have it up and playing to no end. That would just be too dramatic for them to pass up.
Plus, I am pretty sure, or atleast would like to think, that track in high danger zones is watched after like mama hen and her chicks.
Wow, I just through TOTAL coincidence saw the movie 'Under seige" this morning where, after the train wrecks at the end, it goes through exactly such a fall…not sure how much of it was real vs special effects, but it sure was entertaining.
The funny thing was , I saw the movie “Atomic Train” for the first time ever last night, and I didn’t even come into the weekend expecting to see any train movies
There is a very tall CSX bridge that crosses I-75 in northern Kentucky. This bridge is very high off the ground because trains go through the hills/mountains. If there ever was a disaster on this bridge,
1)Everyone in the entire world would know about it,
and
2)CSX would be in real big trouble.
I hope there is never an accident on this bridge because I know for a fact that there will be fatalities.[V]
You’re kidding? [:I][:I] No, embarrased to say I did not notice,…but in defense of my obvious poor perception, I really don’t take much of Stephen Segal’s work seriously,…he seems just a tad “full of himself” for my tastes, so it’s likely that i had the reality sensors set on ‘pre-numbed’ to begin with,…and failed to see the couplers…
If I ever see it again, I’l be sure to look for it…
Even something falling off Starruca or one of the other, similar very solid viaducts would be beyond newsworthy - Starruca is over 100’ tall.
“Wadya mean, I gotta walk the train. You want the train walked, YOU walk it…”
At least the head-end crew can see the track/bridge ahead. I’ve ridden the Adirondack Scenic over the Moose River bridge at McKeever several times, and looking out the windows of the passenger cars and seeing nothing but the water below you can be a tad unnerving…
I like his movies actually. “On deadly ground” was kick azz. When R Lee comes out of the oil and Segal just blasts him with his own shotgun it was great.
Um, they were a little larger than HO, a program on telly a month or so ago entitles “Hollywood’s Greatest Explostions” (I think) showed the filming of this and there was a picture of a special effects guy standing next to the train and it was round about knee high, so either the guy was a very small midget or the train was way bigger than HO.
On the topic; railroads put guard rails on bridges to stop trains from falling off… They work pretty good too.
Actually, IIRC, the guard rails are only to help keep the wheels on the structure if the cars stay on their wheels. If something occurs to push a car beyond the track structure (or beyond its center of gravity), the car will probably go over. And probably do some damage to the structure on the way down.
