Railfaning Spartanburg, SC

I recently started volunteering at the Hub City Railroad Museum, housed in the old Southern Railway depot in downtown Spartanburg. Aside from having a neat museum, it’s a great place to watch trains. You have NS on the former Southern Crescent line and CSX working on the former Clinchfield, Atlantic Coast Line and Piedmont & Norther Tracks. Here’s some shots I grabbed last Wednesday.

We came so close to going to Spartanburg last week when we were visiting my sister in Charlotte. Went to Lancaster (and Chester) instead. Next time, we’ll give ourselves time enough to do both! What one spot in Spartanburg would you recommend for seeing the most trains?

The Southern Railway depot on Magnolia Street. You have both NS (ex-Southern) main line as well as CSX on the former Clinchfiled, ACL and Piedmont & Norhtern. You will see lots of train traffic in the morning hours. The Hub City Railroad museum is located in the depot and has a scanned going. It’s open Wednesday and Saturday.
