I’m a SC railfan. My question is, do anyone know of any place in Greenwood, SC that I can Railfan? I railfan Devine Junction here in South Carolina, but I’m making a trip to the Greenwood area and would like to know of any spots around Greenwood I can catch some heavy main line action.
E-mail me at columbiarail@yahoo.com if you know of any place or just answer the post
Hi,
So, where are the other good spots in Columbia? I’ve been at Devine Jct., but it also seems like a no-man zone when alone … I’ll be headin’ that way this week for a conference. Thanks, and good luck w/ your question.
Yes. Norfolk Southern, CSX, and Amtrak (Amtrak only at night) comes through this spot. CSX Cayce Yard is to the Southwest and Norfolk Southern’s Andrew’s Yard is to the East.
Devine Junction is the best spot because everything that comes into Columbia, 9 times out of 10 have to come through the junction. But, you can also go down to CSX Cayce Yard if you like to see some yard action. It’s right down the road from Devine Jct. There is also Elmwood Jct. thats here in Columbia, but everything that comes through there, comes through Devine Jct. so I think Devine Jct is the best place to be. Mornings from 6-noon is pretty busy and late afternoon is pretty busy as well. The best da is Wednesday to railfan here. There’s pretty much action all day long. I usually be in Devine Jct. everyday before I go to work, so if you come by there in the morning, you migh catch me there, or another railfan that usually be out there with me.
How do you get to Devine Jct.Do all the rr’s intersect there that serve Columbia. It is safe there do i need to pack heat when i go there.
Well, if you come here at night, you might have to. If you come here in the daylight, you’re alright. Tell me which direction you’re coming from and I will tell you the best way to get here.
I77 SOUTH from ROCK HILL
Take I77 all the way to the Shop Road exit. Once you exit, take a right onto Shop Road and head towards town. The road will then become George Rogers Blvd and it will end at Assembly St. Bear Right on Assembly and take it through a light, one set of tracks (Olympia Spur) and across another set of tracks (CSX Eastover Sub) and to the next light and make a left onto Whaley St.
You will cross those same CSX tracks, and once you cross them, go to the 3rd right (Gasden St.). This will take you right down to the tracks. There’s 4 tracks here with a open spot in between all of them. Park there and enjoy. What day do you plan to come down? I will be there in the morning until 9AM for the rest of the week until Friday. Friday I will be down there from about 7:30 AM until the afternoon.
