I finished a video of a bunch of NJT action at Covent Station, as well some footage from the ride in and out of New York Penn Station.

Thats the way to run transit trains ! How long did you wait between trains?
Thanks for sharing…
I haven’t used the word in about twenty years, but Ty, that vid was awesome! [:)]
You should get a tripod and turn pro if you haven’t already.
I do have one quick question: anytime I saw a locomotive it was on push duty, as opposed to pull. Was that just the luck of the draw or is it push in, pull out? Because it seems to addled me that you shot the movement both inbound and outbound.
I only waited about 5 minutes between trains. I’m pretty impressed, that’s running with subway-like frequency!
We have a tri-pod, but I sort of forgot it, plus I didn’t want to have to lug it all around the Museum of Natural History in New York, as this wasn’t a dedicated “railfan trip” My parents wanted to drive in, but I convinced them to take the train.[:)]
I’m not sure why the locomotives were in push mode, it did seem pretty odd to me. My home commuter railroad, the MBTA into Boston always runs with the locos on the outbound end. I suppose that’s to keep the noisy smoky (and that’s compared to electrics, I’m a diesel fan myself) diesels away from the platform entrances at North/South Stations in Boston.
There was one train in pull mode, that GP40-something in NJT paint. I also saw some F40s in push mode, although those were across the river in the Hoboken area maintanance yard, the camera wouldn’t focus through the fog. Those might’ve been just moving around in the yard though. I have some friends with a bit of an obsession with NJT, I’ll ask them and post back here when I get an answer.
Thank you for the compliments guys!
Very nice collection of video segments…I enjoyed it…nice use of music interludes and short segments of descriptive type on the screen. Thanks
When I railfanned the metro New York area in 1982, NJ Transit and LIRR diesel trains which operated as push-pulls had the locomotive on the outbound end. The North Jersey Coast line (former NY&LB) operated in a conventional fashion (no push-pulls) due to the motive power change.
Well, I got the answer about the diesels, they operate in push pull because they only go to Hoboken, the cab car is always on the Hoboken end of the train. I can understand that. No idea why the electrics run pushing always. Could be a coincidence.
Oh, and I forgot to mention the conductors kept giving me funny looks and laughing behind their hands, a 14 year old shooting video out the window wearing a Conrail T-shirt…[(-D] I really looked like a foamer!
Well, at least you weren’t told to put the camera away, as I was when I tried to get a shot of a PATH train at Newark/Penn.
In all fairness, though, that was the only time I was asked to put the camera away in roughly fifteen shooting opportunities on or near the NEC in my trip this past October.
