Since my son was born in June I have spent a lot of time awake at 2:00-4:30 a.m. Flipping through my DISH channels at that time I discovered a series of railfanning shows on RFDTV that I was previously unaware of. I’m not sure what the real name of the series is. The progamming guide simply calls it Trains & Locomotives. There is not a lot of dialogue on these shows, just a lot of great footage of trains passing over a specific subdivision or segment of track that is the theme for that show. Each show is an hour long. These are great–the next best thing to actually railfanning in areas that I may never get to actually visit myself. The schedule is strange. I flip through the DISH programming guide to find out when it is on every day or so. It doesn’t seem to fit a specific pattern, but each episode is on 2-3 times at different times of day over a two or three day period. Check it out. RFDTV seems to play quit a bit of railroad programming, even some on model railroading from time to time.

I keep hearing about RFDTV, and wish I could get it, but my cable company doesn’t offer it. I have been told by another member here that I have appeared on one of the shows. There was a video made of me and my layout made 11 years ago, which occasionally airs in the wee hours of the morning.

RFD-TV is on Dish Network channel 9409, DirecTV channel 379, Mediacom channel 78, and National Cable Television Cooperative. The program called “Trains and Locomotives” begins on Mondays at 6:00 p.m. Eastern time and is repeated at different times during the week. Another one hour train segment consists of two 30-minute shows, and begins on Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. Eastern time, and is repeated during the week. The first 30 minute segment is called “Trackside” with David Reed, and features different locations around the world. The second half is called “I Love Trains,” and features Lionel and American Flyer layouts throughout the country.
I think I have seen what you are talking about. It is footage from a cab as it goes from one town to another and I think it was shot in Norway. Sorry, I don’t remember the last time I saw it though.
All of those railfan channels on the dish must be why everyone is leaving cable.
