Railpictures.net

This has probably been discussed a lot, but who here is fed up with railpictures.net’s arrogance towards certain pictures? I posted two decent pictures today and they have the balls to reject them. The pics were http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v647/chris_bodkin/ff5a0c60.jpg and http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v647/chris_bodkin/000_0100.jpg . They gave me some stupid s**t about them being too dark and whatnot. [:(!] Obviously their screeners are on crack or weed or something[:(!]

Have they posted other photo’s there before that you have taken and is this your first rejection.??? [?] You sound a liitle bitter. [:(]

Umm, if you don’t mind my saying so those photos don’t look like any big screaming deal. No bad, but nothing to write home about.

Your pictures are dark and aren’t cropped well.

If you can’t deal with critiques of your pics don’t send them there. You come across as a whiney little jerk - grow up, grow some balls, and be a man.

I probably have had more rejections than you and I don’t crab about it - I improve my photography and get pics accepted.

Try sending some pics to Trains Mag and then whine and curse like that to them - see how far you get.

That was the first time I posted there and yes, the first rejection… I know of numerous topics exactly like this somewhere here… and most of them have nothing good to say about railpictures.net…[;)] Also the reason why I am coming off as crabby is i’m currently battling a cold and believe me, I am not the most pleasant person when it comes to them…[:p]

I would seriously consider editing your first post, removing all obscenities, whether they are asterik’ed or not. Many forumers have had their butts booted out the door due to obscene phrases and words.

Matt

As for the rant involving Railpictures, they do have several, shall we say, “requirements” on their selection. I have been treated unfairly by them in the past. The first photo would get rejected any day, even if the photographer was the screener. It’s a good photo for reference, or just to have a photo of that locomotive, but they look for pictures that look like the photographer is doing it for a career, not just for railfanning. The second is fine, a bit dark though. Nothing a little editing couldn’t fix.

Now, let’s go back to your post yesterday, with photos of that IC locomotive. The first two photos in that post I’d give a shot. They seem to not be too dark, and they are nice and clear. If you get a rejection, though, please don’t rant about it over here.

Oh, if you want anything to go to Railpictures, I’d suggest removing the date stamp.

Matt

Okay, this may sound harsh, but I am going to say it. Right now, I have 27 photos on railpics. I have had over 50 rejected. Railpictures.net has helped my improve my photography, my eyes, and my photo editor skill. I too learned the fact that railpictures has high standards, and yes I was upset, but I did not go screaming and cussing. Ya wanna know what I did? I went to the forums, kindly asked for photo critiques, got some advice from the VERY NICE PEOPLE at the forums, and now I have over 20 pics, and more on the way. The folks on the forum are very kind, complamentry, and easy to get along with.

Some tips- Only send in stuff that you took on sunny days. Keep the sun at your back, and make the train the subject, and try to get the entire loco in the picture. You have a good eye for photography, just keep the sun at your back!

Listen, do not go swearing on these forums. I would edit those swear words if you want to keep your membership here. Railpictures is NOT an elitst club, they are very welcoming folks. Yes their, standards are high… and I LIKE IT THAT WAY!!!

stop flaming railpictures!!!

Not to be mean, but these really aren’t the best pictures. But yes, they are very evil at times. For instance, they rejected…http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=124248 until I appealed. Guess what it was rejected for? “Bad angle” even though it is probably the most famous angle on the CP. Oh well, it just makes you feel all the more better when one gets on.
Seriously, it’s no good complaining, if you really don’t like it don’t go. Simple as that.
But a better idea is to attempt to get more of the train in the picture, and on a sunny day. They seem to love well lit 3/4 wedge shots!

Railpictures.net have their standards and your pictures don’t meet them…pure and simple. Take whatever constructive criticism they offer and attempt to apply it to your future photography. Just because you took the picture doesn’t mean it has the proper composition and artistic flair to be worthy of be published.

Even the best photographers have works that get rejected. Live, learn and grow.

If you are bound to have something published you might try

They seem not to have as critical screeners.

I got a friend of mine on railpictures.net, John Witthouse or www.stlouisrail.tk and he has this to say.

“Sure, they may be strict about the requirments, but its all for the good. The owner says that its to HELP people improve their photography and photo editing skills”

also, sd60, those photos are clearly not railpictures.net quality. The sky is overcast, the photos are to dark, the trains are slightly blurred, and one of them even has a telphone pole in front of the train.

May I suggest that you look at other pictures on railpictures.net? Look at the lighting of the image, the angle that its shot at, and even clearity of the image. Now I am not critizing (spelling) you but try to improve your skills and get a photo editing program for your computer. As you continue to experiment around with your images, your skills will be better.

As for those two images, they are not even worth trying to post. even if everything was like other rp.net photos, they would still be rejected for the following reason
“common power on an overcast day”

Try improving your skills, your photos do have some potential, but the angels are all to common.

I don’t have to worry about rp.net submissions, as I shoot strictly video. I don’t have to worry about the sky or anything like that.

Best wishes and hope you get it!

I think, emd_sd_60, that you have way too much “faith in very dark things” so that you “cannot possibly see the light”… I am positive that is an accurate quote of Psalms 324:152. Wasn’t that said by the great prophet Vader? Someone correct me, please. I’m humble.

I haven’t had a picture accepted by them yet. Yeah, I was a little upset the first time (I travelled a long way for a certain pic - I couldn’t help that it was cloudy). However, I got over it and realized that it is a challenge now. I love it. My wife is a fantastic photographer, and now she wants the challenge to get one accepted too.

The benefit? There are thousands of incredible pictures on that site. Imagine having to weed through TENS of thousands of pictures that would have otherwise been rejected? I’ve actually contacted photographers through the site to buy prints from them. There are some beautiful pictures there.

I’ll be honored when a pic of mine is accepted.

We all can now consider the rp.net debacle dead now… I started my own photo site at Community Webshots.[8D] You all can access it in my sig or here at http://community.webshots.com/user/Chris_Bodkin . Enjoy![:)]

Try to shoot during full Daylight when the sun is shining. That’s why I will not shoot Film Photography when it is Cloudy. Trains under Cloudy skyies don’t mix. Take it from Grumpysworld. And by the way,Those Photo’s did not look to that bad at all. I think there just way to picky. Allan.

I think it is the high standards you complain about that makes so many people work so hard to get their pictures posted on the Railpictures.net site. When people are successful it creates a real sense of accomplishment that they wouldn’t get if Railpictures.net accepted any old pictures people sent them.

Honestly, I would reject your pictures as well. There isn’t anything special or unique about them and as others have mentioned the quality of the pictures is suspect.

Bottom line its their site, their rules and anyone who doesn’t like it doesn’t have to view the site or make submissions to it.

EMD_SD_60. I think that your Photo’s looked D*am good. Keep it up the good work. I personaly think that they looked woundefull. Allan.

Clouds can add a lot to pictures take a look at this one. Picture is nothing without the clouds.

True you have to use them right though

The photo you have posted here does have some potential. First crop about 1/2 the image away. Crop vertically to the right of the second pole to the left of the loco. Leave the right pole and the shanty left of it. Next crop horizontally just below the second pile of ties. I would like to see them leave but that may crop too close to the loco pilot. Next find your photo process soft ware pull down for the levels adjustment. In Photoshop it is [image]>[adjustments]>[levels]. that will bring up the histogram. Slide the right slider to the left until it gets almost to the body of the bell shaped curve and do the same with the slider on the left by moving it right. Adjust the middle slider to get a good exposure without blowing out the sky. You can also use the highlights and shadows adjustment to boost the detail in the train dark side. Boost the saturation and then post with what that looks like. It still may not be accepted for railpictures but I am sure you will like the image a lot more.
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT YOU DO THIS WITH A COPY OF THE ORIGINAL IMAGE OR WHEN YOU SAVE THE CHANGES YOU WILL LOSE THE ORIGINAL IMAGE FILE. Copy the original file to a CD-R and then work from that and save the changed file with a new name.

Well lets review what we learned. If you can’t get on Raipic’s you can allways settle for community webshots. WAIT TILL YOUR COLD IS OVER BEFORE YOU GO FLAMING A HIGH QUALITY WEB SITE. Here’s a tissue now go to your room!!! [B)]
