Since slug units have no prime mover, by definition they can’t add any “additional horsepower.” But they do have traction motors and add tractive effort which is useful for pulling heavy loads at low speeds.
I wondered when we were going to see slugs added to gensets for max tractive effort(not horsepower). The additional wheels with brakes greatly improves control over the cuts of cars too. It’s amazing the difference between switching with one engine versus two - probably why IHB uses braking sleds in Chicago area. They are slug-like former engines without traction motors but just used for the additional braking effort.
Now we will not hear the drone of the V-12 & V-16’s . NJ
