Railroad & Asphalt Industries (prototype news)

Hey, everybody,

I was flipping through the latest copy of the Asphalt Institute’s magazine (forget what it’s called) at work today, and a couple of brief stories caught my attention, because they are both related to railroad industry. Thought you all might be interested. Enjoy!

EDIT: Here’s a link I found on the BP website that talks a little more about the tank car pictured in the article (the “Safety Train”). Apparently it’s some sort of training device on wheels that’s used to simulate leaks and other tank car problems. Might be a cool modeling project for someone who has a modern refinery on their layout.

I couldn’t find anything on the asphalt roadbed other than a bunch of technical papers (I didn’t spend a whole lot of time trying, though):

Interesting! Does this mean that we can use Woodland senics roadbed without balast? A shot of the new track system would be interesting. Anybody there near some with a camera?

Trains magazine had an article about BNSF’s transcon a few months ago and it had some information about and photographs of the asphalt road bed in it. I do not remember the issue.
