Railroad Computer Design Programs

Hello all,

I’m beginning to plan my layout and was wondering if any members on this list had used either 3rd PlanIt/CADrail 8 or any other computer planning aid to design their layout?

I’ve joined the Yahoo 3rd PlanIt group to get an idea of the strengths and weaknesses of this program and have also searched through these forums for a similar comparison.

Although their is something on these forums, it doesn’t really go into any depth so superficially, it would appear that the main difference is that you can run a computer generated train over your layout with 3rd PlanIt and Atlas have something which is (obviously) limited to Atlas products. However, I’m really wondering what the differences are between libraries and support of not only these programs but also any others members of this list may have used? Apart from using this program to assist in a track plan, I would also like to convert some B&O plans to N Scale so that they can be modelled at a latter date.

In conclusion, what I’d like to know is:

How extensive are the libraries of each (buildings and track)?

What is the support/backup like for each of these programs?

And in relation to ease of learning, how good are the tutorials or manuals provided?

I look forward to your responses.

I used 3D Railroad Concept and Design by Abracadata. If you are computor oriented you will learn this fairly quicky, but I found the learning curve a bit challenging.

The library is extensive, has many track brands to choose from and there are many structures to choose from also.

You can test run trains and put restrictions on grades.

There is a benchwork section also.

The manual was ok but the tutorial was more helpfull.

From what I saw out there for the price I think I did ok. I use it mostly to check grades and clearance now as My layout is already planned and in working order.

If you use the Search function on the forum, you’ll find a number of other threads on this. Briefly, most people like to start with either RTS from www.atlasrr.com or XtrakCad from www.silub.com, both of which are free. RTS is the simplest, but also the most limited. As you might expect, its library is based on Atlas track and structures. XtrakCad has a more extensive library, and is a more capable program.

Hi Geoff,

I used the XTrkCad program to design my layout. The cost was right: Free!! There is a tutorial on using the program; I would strongly suggest you use the tutorial to save your mind. The learning curve is very steep if you don’t know anything about CAD programs.

I’m not an expert with the software but I can draw track plans and set elevations and such. Here’s an example of what you can create using the software (my track plan):

I’ve used Atlas, XtraCAD, and 3rd PlanIt. I figured if XtraCAD was good, 3rd PLanIt would be better since you have to pay $100 for it. But after working with 3rd PlanIt for a year, I went back to XtraCAD. I found it easier to use and more intuitive.

Just because it is free doesn’t mean it is not a powerful program.

Just make sure you follow the tutorial.

Here are my plans with XtrkCad.
