Depends on both the railroad and the location. Along the Valley Railroad, for instance, anywhere from 3 to about 10’, depending on how busy the road is.and whether there are actual crossing gates.
There is a yellow caution sign and a “RR XING” stencil on the pavement further back.
Your best bet is to see if you can find some prototype photos.
Some states have standards for that. I have heard 12 feet mentioned for my state.
According to the santa fe standards book, 15’ from the centerline of the track for non-gated signal/sign. Gated signals were 12’ when the road was perpendicular to the tracks. When the road is not perpendicular, its more complicated.
The crossbucks are railroad owned and maintained. The advance warning sign and pavement marking are owned and maintained by the appropriate govt. highway or road department.
