Railroad Crossing

He’s Lucky and dumb![banghead]

Apparently the poop for brains behind the wheel was more worried about scratching his precious SUV bashing through the gate than the possibility that it might get hit by a train.

I noticed the double barrier gates which are common for many grade crossings in Europe. Did this grade crossing accident take place in Europe? I agree the driver of the car trying to cross the track in front of an on-coming train had no brain.

I have seen drivers trying to run through grade crossings here in the USA when the gates come down. I have noticed if the gate strikes an object when it is being lowered it will raise up, and lower again once its path is clear.

Again, an opportunity missed to purge the gene pool…

This looks like a CFF, Swiss Railway passenger train.

What was he thinking…? oh, yes, right: he was NOT !!

Cheers

I guess it would be appropriate to post this here, even thoug it’s a European RR video.

This might be titled " You Out of the Gene Pool" or maybe Stupidity is a universal curse.

Driver killed Theodore railroad crossing had tried to beat trains before#### By Casandra Andrews##### March 29, 2010, 7:01PM

Story has video and photo of the UP loco and car . This was not the firt time the driver tried this but will be his last.

Doesn’t look Swiss to me - the coaches are wrong. Suspect somewhere in central Eurrope, say Czech Republic or Slovakia.

A very misleading statement in this article.

Federal statistics, Hudson said, show that more crashes happen at crossings with gates and signals than at those that are unmarked: “We don’t want to wait, so we take a chance.”

Absolutely no cite of how many accident per say 100,000 crossings at a signaled crossing vs an unsignaled one.

I’d say this guy had used up all his chips. According to the article, he was cited a while back for passing a stopped school bus. Folks may run stop signs and railroad crossings for any number of reasons, but I think pretty much everybody knows you don’t pass a stopped school bus.

Apparently it was a CSX track and train in Mobile Alabama, though with a UP locomotive leading.

One perceptive comment to the article, by screen name workforlivn, although maybe his knowledge or use of railroad terminology could use a little polishing:

‘‘Taxpayer springs for the helicopter ride. CSX has to repaint front bumper.’’

'Nuff said.

I’ve heard that before. I could see that being true. A crossing with gates and/or signals would most likely have more vehicle traffic than one with just crossbucks. More traffic, more opprotunity to (literally) run across someone in a hurry.

The part in that statement I find misleading is, “those that are unmarked.” I’ve never seen a public crossing that was unmarked. All the ones I’ve seen have something, even if it’s only a passive sign. Our local media will sometimes mention that a crossing was unmarked or something similiar, meaning it didn’t have signals/gates. The crossing was marked, the driver ignored the warning provided.

Even that’s not accurate - most of those air medical services bill for service. His estate will likely be paying the bill.

Usually the bill is giving to the customer or the insurance.

The “Four Quadrant Crossing Gates” are common in the Northeast. The only crossing gates left in the Northeast Corridor, southeast CT and southern RI, are all “Four Quadrant”. Commuter Rail with its 80mph service almost always use the “Four Quadrant System”. Note that the driving lane gate comes down first, then, with a delay, the other lane. This gives (might encourage) a driver who enters the crossing late a chance to get accross before the next gate in front of him comes down.

That’s assuming this goober had insurance or that his estate has any money in it.
