Does anyone know of a railroad “family tree” that would show what railroads were merged to become what other railroads and the relative dates of operation of each railroad? I believe the Baltimore and Ohio was the first railroad (although horse drawn) but I could be wrong.

If you can not find exactly what you’re looking for, do a Google search of “railroad merger history”.
Good luck!
Thanks for the lead. Anyone interested can also try http://www.spikesys.com/Trains/fmly_tre.html.
Further suggestions are welcome.

Yes there are books on the railroad that you are interested in and it would tell you the history of that line.
IIRC, the Granite Railway (Quincy, MA) started operation in 1826. The B&O was chartered a year later.

The B&O was the first common carrier in the U.S.
