I wonder if he had a GPS receiver? If he did, he should have known where he was.

A compass and a map will suffice

Loons abound! 59 y-o-a, and no common sense! I hope D & S sends him a bill.

I’ve back packed in that area - it can be quite rough and demanding in some areas. So much so, a GPS can’t sync in the deep canyons. Put a few inches of snow on the ground and everything changes. Can’t beat a compass and a good topo map! Hard to tell from the article, but he may have saved his life by hunkering down once he realized he was lost. Having a fire going and ready to feed it when he heard search and rescue in the area was smart. However, having a buddy hiker would be most desirable in that wilderness area!

I’ve been back there as well, a compass, a topo and the ability to triangulate are necessary, he did well by staying put and being prepared for the weather.
