Railroad historian, author Stephen L. Carr dies

RIP, Stephen Carr… You’ve been instrumental in my understanding of local railroad history. Thank you.

Just today, prior to seeing this announcement, I consulted my tattered copy of Utah Ghost Rails after seeing a photo article on the Mercur and Ophir mining district in the Salt Lake Tribune. Beautiful work…

Your knowledge will be missed.

Stephen Carr: we have two of your books, “Utah Ghost Rails” as well as “Utah Ghost Towns” that we purchased in the early '70s. Thank you for your wonderful work; you will be missed.

I consider myself lucky to have met Mr. Carr onboard one of UP’s excursions to Oregon with the 3985. He was a very nice, gentleman who was very willing to share infomation. I recall that he seemed pleased that I found his Utah Ghost Rails book useful. We were so busy chatting that the train almost left with me still onboard! Thank you Mr. Carr, RIP!

My sympathy and best regards to the family. Mr. Carr is gone, but his work will be around for a long, long time.
