How often are major railroads hiring new people? I have put my applications in with them and i was just wonder what the chances are that i even get an interview? I have talked to a guy that lives in my town thats an engineer for bnsf and he says i have a good chance because he said a lot of people don’t make it past the drug tests. Just wanted to get opinions.
I just called the CPRS hotline and they are looking for conductors and engineers, but thats all I know…
What steps should i take to become an engineer. I know that you have to be a conductor for a year or so before you can become and engineer. As for schooling for conductors, where are some places to get trained or does the railroad offer training?
The railroad will do the training. You may get trained as a conductor when you only have one year on senority, but you will not be engineering any trains until ou get more senority. I would also check the thread with railroadchick, good info there. A good arguemetn to!
Another way to possibly get the foot in the door is to hire w/the contract taxi services that transport rail crews. These jobs basically don’t pay much but you are around rail workers all the time, can ask them any questions and get a feel for what the rr is like and will have some knowledge of working conditions, rules, crew mgmt issues how the pay scale and all that stuff works. In my area several drivers have been hired as condrs and one was even hired as a ydmstr. Good drivers have a very good chance of hiring on. My girlfriend has been driving for three yrs has a perfect safety record and interviews this wk for a BNSF condr class starting soon.
