Railroad Memorabilia

It’s gonna sound funny but the bridge is in Poughkeepsie NY. The actual address is 61 parker ave.

Yes, the bridge is still there. The fire occurred in 1974 after Penn Central neglected fire safety measures on the bridge and laid off the fire watchmen stationed there, and while nobody is certain what started the blaze, it was likely caused by a passing train as the fire occurred relatively soon after a train passed. Penn Central was rumored to have preferred the ex-NYC route across the Hudson south of Albany, and as such did not choose to make the repairs to bring the line back into service, although the structure was still sound. In 2009, its restoration into the walkway over the hudson was completed. It is now part of the “Empire State Trailway” which is a series of interconnected bike trails that run from the City to Buffalo, along with the Maybrook line to the east all the way to Brewster NY and a good piece of the line west of the bridge. Its a great walk/ride, and is the longest fixed elevated pedestrian bridge in the world, at 212ft above the Hudson and 6,768 feet of length. Its a great railfanning location for operations around the Poughkeepsie Station for Metro North and Amtrak on the east shore, or the CSX River Sub on the West shore.
