Can anyone please tell me of a GOOD RR museum in either New Mexico or Texas. I’m new to the area and would like to check one out.

The Galveston RR museum has a pretty good collection of locomotives and rolling stock.

Clovis NM has an old depot full of old pics and other suff plus it is full of model trains and also is right next to the old ATSF transcon.

It is my understanding their is a very active group in Albuquerque that is restoring a Santa Fe Northern. Knowing several other groups they probably could use a few more volunteers to get the work done. There is a Museum site on the Classic Trains forum that might be helpful. One of the members of the Northern restoration posts almost weekly pictures of the progress on the big Northern.
There is a museum in connection with a park in Dallas that has a DDA40X and other great pieces, very close to downtown.
Texas is biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig state but if you are near Dallas they have one which includes a UPRR big boy & 6900[:D]

If ever on your way to Albuquerque, take a sidetrip to Madrid/Cerrillos. If the old hippies and tourist trap folks have not gone overboard, there are two ex- ATSF/SFRM&E steam engines at the townsite at Madrid. Santa Fe 2-10-4’s in AQ & SF, 2-6-2’s in Vegas and Raton. with the state taking over Belen to AQ to Lamy/Santa Fe, you are likely to see a lot of old oddball stuff during start-up operations.

The Dallas museum is at the state fairgrounds.
Where did 5010 go? (off of Second Street, 1 Block south of I-40)

I’m afraid I don’t know. To the best of my knowledge, 5010 was scrapped with the demise of steam. The surviving AT&SF 2-10-4’s are 5000, 5011, 5017, 5021, and 5030. 5011 was displayed for a time (temporarily, I believe) in Albuquerque, but was donated to the California State Railroad museum at least a decade ago. http://www.steamlocomotive.com/texas/atsf.shtml

I did a little digging and found that ATSF 2-10-4 #5021 that was originally in Abq. NM and was donated to the museum in California. Unfortunately, according to the site, it has been stored outside and is in very poor shape.

Oh boy, I made a mistake. It is 5021, not 5011. The good news is that 5021 is now inside, I understand [:)], as well as 2925. Leaving them outside was a bad move.

Welcome - not as familiar w/ RR museums in that area, but if you want to see a lot of current freight action you have 2 really good choices, each about 2-3 hrs away from you. You could either drive up to Clovis, NM on the BNSF to see around 100 trains per day. Clovis is a key mixing center for BNSF where they do a lot of block swaps. Almost all trains from California to TX, Memphis, Chicago, KC and points east pass throught Clovis.
The other option is to go just West of El Paso on the UP RR. Right along I-10 the UP Sunset Route connects So. Cal w/ all UP points in Texas as well as KC, Memphis, ST. Louis and some Chicago traffic. East of El Paso it splits to multiple routes, but on the west side, you get all the action on one route (see the Deming, NM area.) Expect about 45 trains per day there.
