Congratulations John! You have done a great job with the Center.
Damn! I had to be a 4 year old preschooler when Mr. Gruber wrote about CUS in trains! I had just had my first of several experiences with that station that summer and grew to love that station until the owner railroads insisted on tearing down the concourse and putting in that basement facility we’ve had ever since although you can’t knock what Amtrak has done to improve it.
Keep up the great work, John! It was an honor being able to work with you on Vintage Rails.
John is simply one of the best of his generation. If there is a photographer who is better at making the most of a magic moment, I haven’t encountered him or her yet. No one identifies that moment as effectively as John. Presence of mind, technique, a feel for context, he’s got it all.
Traditional railroad photography emphasizes machinery and technology. In his quiet way, John is moving us towards an appreciation of the people who ran the trains and their stories. In the process he is turning up fascinating new information about the crafts and skills that went into the operation of a railroad and the lives that railroaders led.
