Of the scale rulers shown on the Walthers link provided above, I like the General HO ruler - it is sometimes useful to have access to its N and O supplemental rulers. Many LHS’s have them by the way - and my wife once picked up one new in its packaging at a thrift shop for fifty cents!

Some years ago I was able to buy a dial caliper marked off in HO scale inches and feet. It has proven very useful and I am somewhat surprised there was not enough demand to keep in on the market. Of course with a little math you can figure out the HO (or other scale) measurements but it sure is useful and fast to them have immediately available on the dial.

By the way I knew a guy who put his scale ruler on a copier machine and kept the cut-out copy folded up in his wallet. Sometimes at swap meets he’d find a built-up structure he liked but it wasn’t always obvious what scale it was built to, or he wanted to get a clear notion of its footprint before buying.

I have a long scale ruler I use in the house and find it very useful. Every hobby person should have one and they should be readily available at better online e-tailers if not at your LHS.

Even more useful is a metal one that is about 6 inches long that I carry in my checkbook that I have with me when I shop so I can measure items while I shop to get an idea of size. It is another take on the photo copier-made paper one and I find it very useful!

I have one like this and I find it to be very useful.

Do a Google search for ho scale ruler. You can even download them and print them out.

Yahoo.com is also good for searching.

I use the General rule once in a while but my digital Metric/USA caliper I use a lot. A simple calculator takes care of the math.

I even found digital calipers with a USB port in a search. I do not need one though.

I see them all the time in hobby shops and trains shows. I have the metal one for all scales, the clear plastic one for S, and a clear plastic card for S that I carry in my wallet that has the scale and people sizes on it.
