Railroad & Restoration Volunteers?

I know that some of us here are involved in tourist railroads, museums, and restoration projects. Coburn35, and Simon Reed come to mind. Who else is involved in preserving railroad history for present and future generations?

Thanks

Yes, I would be interested to see who else does restoration stuff like I do.

Since I just moved to Northern Utah, I plan to volunteer at the Golden Spike National Monument. In fact, I had the opportunity of meeting Maggie Johnson, the new superintendent last night at a social function.

I know what the golden spike is, but I’ve never heard of the Golden Spike Monument. What is that?

Thanks

I think he means Promontory but the real true blue golden spike is at Stanford in California [:)]

I guess I was asking about the monument, not the spike. And who painted the golden spike blue???[;)]

I’m a member of the Heart of Dixie railroad museum, Calera, Alabama; a member of the Georgia rail museum at Duluth, Georgia; and a member of the Southern Railroad Historical Society based in Kennesaw, Georgia.

Who said it was painted blue all I said is the real true blue one is @ Stanford in Palo Alto California. I did not see a monument @ Promontory what they did is put a special tie where the golden spike was driven to show that is where it was done. The site not monument is operated these days by the National Parks people the same ones who run Yellowstone, Grand Canyon & all the other national parks in the USA.

You can check out what it looks like by clicking on the below site then going to the Utah June 2005 gallery

I volunteer on the steam crew at the Orange Empire Railway Museum–Ventura County Railway no. 2.

I also volunteer with the friends of the Cumbres & Toltec, and whenever I’m in Albuquerque, on Santa Fe 2926.

Sincerely,
Daniel Parks

Do you volunteer on the restoration, or operation of the steam engines?

Right now, neither of them operate. Once we get the VC 2 running (spring of next year), I’ll be helping to operate. Santa Fe 2926 is a long way from running too.

Yesterday on the VC 2, I cleaned out all the accumulated filth in the oil reservoirs for the driving boxes of the front drivers (one of my top five dirtiest days there [:)][:D]). I was glad to do it since it meant that I didn’t have to work putting on lagging (itchy stuff) [;)].

Sincerely,
Daniel Parks

I volunteer at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park in Squamish , BC Canada - over the years I’ve been involved in several projects , assisting in the restoration of F7A #4069, some work on F7b , also part of the team putting Alco S3 #6503 back to running order and now part of the Hudson #2860 steam restoration group. No I’m not an engineer or shopman by trade - I learn everything as we go along – I just like to volunteer to keep historic loco’s from fading away.

Am I understanding this correctly, then, that all of these restored locomotives are in running condition at the Park?

Just sent in my “application” to volunteer in train service on the Adirondack Scenic. Of course, my goal is the right seat, but I’ve got a ways to go before I get there. Start out as trainman, work through conductor, and then up front. How fast will likely depend on how quick a study I am, and how much time I can devote to the effort, not to mention the needs of the RR. I had a few minutes at the throttle this past fall, and the crew was enthusiastic with their encouragement to get involved as a result.

ADIK is all diesel, so no steam in the foreseeable future. It’s possible I could consider some track-type work (they have plenty to do), but that remains to be seen. Besides, I’m not as young as I once was…

I work with the restoration crew at the East Broad Top Railroad in Orbisonia, PA over the summer, mainly on the shops buildings and trackwork.

Year round I volunteer at Steamtown NHS in Scranton PA, currently working with the crew on the PRR K4, and if we quit early, I go work with the roundhouse crew bringing the operating steam engines back in.

I guess I would fit into this category. I volunteer every weekend from 1-4 P.M. at the Mo-Ark Regional Railroad Museum in Poplar Bluff, MO in the old Frisco Depot ( www.pbrail.org ). I volunteer most weekend mornings (at like1-6 A.M.) at the Amtrak Station in the old Mo-Pac Depot. I help my friend from the museum repaint cabooses around the area that are displayed in various towns. I also help out every so often at Jackson, MO on St. Louis and Iron Mountain Southern Railway with their steam or diesel powered excursions as a fireman (just on the diesel, I rarely ride the steamer). About every museum or tourist ride I come across, I try to pay patronage to it. So yeah, I’m a historical railfan, and I also take photos of SD70ACe’s and GEVO’s, lol.

I’m a member/volunteer at the Great Plains Transportation museum [:D] Hopefully we can get FP45 #93 running this srping and take it for a ride on its old trackage of the BNSF emporia sub [;)]

Sorry, I mistyped the name - it is the Golden Spike National Historical Site. It is at Promentory, UT, about 30 miles west of Brigham City UT. They maintain working replicas of the Jupiter and the 119. They are under steam from about the 1st of May to the end of September each year.
