James Guffey of the Norfolk Southern - NC Yahoo Group posted this link recently to an online photo gallery of the last run of the Caldwell County Railroad to Lenoir, NC.
it’s been a long time since I’ve seen a locomotive in Family Lines paint. I read the articles and neither one mentioned the railroad. Why are they closing that branch down?
That is the only uncertain part, I have not found the real reason, but if you look at image 28 and image 29 in James’ gallery you will see the Google construction zone behind the MOW. I suspect that Google needs the space for the data center project.
Just another in a long list of reasons to hate GOOGLE. Surely my web abilities will soon be terminated for speaking ill of GOOGLE. So if this is my last post, its been a fun ride!
I’ve been to two parties at Google’s headquarters in CA. (Yes, I’m bragging, and yes, they were awesome parties.) When I first read your subject line I thought, "that’s odd, I don’t remember any tracks near their headquarters. Whoops… wrong coast. [:o)]

Oh, here’s evidence I was there… you can clearly see me in this photo:
Having not actually been to the site and locations myself, not knowing the exact details, and relying on the images that James posted that would seem to be the case. I would think that tractor trailer trucking would now serve those industries.
Yes, it is a sad day for the short line RR at the price of expansion and technology. The Google project has been in the news here locally in NC for about a year now, and it is supposed to be a redundant data center to help with their disaster/security/business continuity and recovery.
And the real estate market in and around Hickory and Lenoir NC are supposed to hot right now! But, how that all pans out is still anyone’s guess!
Hey Bergie, nice photo, yea I see you in there! [:-^] [:D] Very photogenic too!
