Railroad stocks hitting all time highs.

I don’t know if any of you are paying attention. But BNSF,CSXT,NS&UPRR stocks are hitting all time highs today. What is going on? This is very good for the Railroads. UPRR stocks and D@mn near 100 dollars a share. Allan.

Yes & it is even better when you 1st bought UPRR stock in the 60s I’m rooting for 200 myself then a split of 6 to 1 & then another rise to 100. GO UPRR![:)]

As they say, “It’s the economy stupid,” (not personally to anyone here of course). The economy is on fire – GNP is growing nicely, umemployment is at it’s lowest since the boom days of the '90s. Railroads are what is called cyclical stocks. They closely track the performance of the economy. When the economy is doing well they do well. When the economy is bad they do bad. There’s a lot to be moved and it appears that truckers have hit a capacity ceiling – not enough drivers, high gasoline prices, etc. That leaves the RRs, who now have the flexibility to raise prices, hence higher profits. As a result some securities analysts, for a change, have begun to issue buy recommendations. I guess the only problem now is whether the RRs have the spare capacity.

Just last summer it seems like UP stock was only about $65 dollars a share. Now look at it. [:0]

Here is the UPRR historical for the last year

GO UPRR!

On top of it all they are paying you to own UPRR stock as they are also paying a dividend

[:o)]

Yes, UP pays a dividend but still not back to where it was before they botched the SP merger and slashed the dividend to save $$$.

Yes I understand but I only bought in early last year so it is all good for me. [:)]

I saw an interview on the TODAY show a week or 2 back with the guy who hosts “Mad Money” on CNBC. He was hot on RR stocks largely due to the upsurge in coal consumption by electric power companies…

His name is Cramer. He us usually on CNBC around 315/330EDT every day. Then he has his own show on MSNBC @ 7PM EDTevery day [:p]

Actually it is trade with the Pacific Basin that is doing this. It is the reason that gas is now over $3.00 cause of the increased demands of China & India for crude oil. Just look on any webcam & count the container trains or even goto my web site & see how many I saw vs all others during my last trip. [:)]

You don’t have to tell me twice spbed. I have never seen so many UP Stack Trains in my life. Some of these sucker are over two miles long. Allan.

I remember back when I was in 6th grade(way early 90’s) I had to do a project on the stock market. Pick 6 companies and keep daily or weekly tabs on their stock price for a month. I picked a couple different railroads, John Deere and I forget the others. The kid who picked the best performers got a prize, a trophy if I remember right. I didn’t even come close to winning. lol

I own 10 shares of BNSF stock and its going 82 bucks a share

farmer:

why would you have picked JD? Just kidding. Deere has been really doing well lately…sales are strong.

Have you seen those Deere unit trains of combines heading for the Ukraine. Sharp!

ed

If only I had the cool quarter million to almost buy a new combine. lol

Deere has the same thing going that UP does, it’s been under the same name since day one.

John Deere could sell sewage to their customers, if they could figure out a way to make it green and yellow. JD owners tend to be zealots, to the point if you cut one he bleeds green and yellow. If Studebaker had had JD’s marketing and manufacturing talent, Studebaker would still be around and would have to hire extra help to count their income.

I’ve heard some not-so-complimentary things about JD construction equipment, but years ago when I was knowledgable about farm equipment they built excellent stuff that was expensive compared to other brands. You could do a lot worse than investing in JD stock, if things are like they used to be.

[dinner] hello new hardwood floors! (My dad works for the UP and has had stock options for many years that he got for free [recognition awards] or for a low price [a very long time ago]).
