Were did the term “To Hog Out” come from when it pertains to the Federal Hours Of Service law.
I don’t really know.
But…
There was (and is) a Federal law that limited the amount of time hogs and other livestock could be kept in a rail car. Then the stock cars had to be set out and the hogs let out for feed and water. This law did not apply to hogs shipped by truck.
With a Federal law limiting the amount of time for hogs, it would seem reasonable that the railroaders would refer to a similar law limiting their own time as a “Hog Law”. (It’s basically the same principal.)
