Railroading in Georgia - but not as you know it

I came across this link on a German railway forum:

It shows the state of the railways in the Georgian autonomous repubblic of Abkhazia. It seems that some work is being done on it.

Abhkazia is the northwestern part of Georgia located on the Black Sea and bordered to the north by Russia. It is not recognized as an independent state.

Ohhhhh… That Georgia.

Remember there was a civil war fought in that area. A couple of years ago I went to a restraunt on a mountaintop with a great view of Tblisi, only problem was that it was a bombed-out shell having been used as an artillery OP.

The rolling stock brings back memories, especially the wooden seat on the commuter coaches a major pain on the butt as i used to ride those between Moscow’s Paveletsky Vokzal (Station) and Domodedevo Airport untl they were replaced and reassigned to commuter runs in 2002. The Bombadier Bi-Levels I ride now are an improvement.

…Awesome views…Looks like it all stopped and left in place never to operate again…Impressive depots…{at sometime in the past}…!

Know nothing of this situation…Will it be resurrected and put to use again…?

Links to/from North Ossetia are effectively broken, Georgia since they don’t recognize the breakaway province and Russia since its constrained by mountains and because they really don’t want abhkazia, its just a stick to beat Georgia with when Georgia talks about joining NATO. At any rate other than the rackets run by the warlord-in-change, there is no real economic activity in the enclave.

Soviet architecture from the 40s &50s is indeed impressive, at least before the post-modernist concrete monstrosities, however like so many things in that neck of the woods, it always looks better from a distance. (That way for buildings you don’t note the crumbling concrete, and exposed wiring etc).

Shucks. Guess there’s no need to look for info on Savannah, Macon, Atlanta or Albany in this thread.

Nope.
