One of these years I want to find myself travelling around Lake Superior from Thunday Bay to Sault Ste. Marie. Once there, in Sault Ste. Marie, what can I find in the way of rail traffic, size of rail yards and port facilities?
I spent some time up Nawth in the UP several times I know there is a rail bridge crossing the soo canal but don’t know the exact destination of the train or if there is a yard in Soo Canada but the soo locks are definately worth spending time there is also the Taquamon falls that you can take a train ride its worth it its linda neat as they will stop in the middle of nowhere and pick up hikers there is also the maritime museam in the whitefish point I don’t know if you ever been to the UP or not but make sure you eat a pasty while your there though
Shhhhh! dont tell people about the up.We dont want the place crawling with trolls!
<Ahem>–Zinger, doesn’t your home make you a troll as well?
When I go to da U.P. later dis summer, I won’t hafta come from under da bridge ta get dere.
Tahquamenon Falls, with the required combination of “trolley” and boat to reach, would be a nice diversion. The two Saults are connected by a double-leaf bascule bridge, and there’s a bit of a yard on the Michigan side. There used to be a steel mill (?) on the Ontario side, but I’ve never seen anything on that side, save from the Locks tour boat.
Oh–I will go over da bridge to get back home, doh.
Zinger. You calling me a troll?[:D]
Wave when you drive through Green Bay on your way “up nort”! The flags may still be at half mast, though…
There is a tourist railroad that I road a couple of years ago. I enjoyed the trip. I does take you through the trainyard and past the indoor turntable. It is the agawa canyon tour. Link is below.
I rode the Agawa Canyon trip years ago,it’s a six hour ride. Back then it was called the Algoma Central RR,the Diesels were painted in the Erie Lackawanna color scheme. But the railroad may have been merged. We went past the Algoma steel mill, saw some of their GE industrial switchers. If you don’t ride the train you might wish to watch it leave the station. Back in 1973 I made a trip to Escanaba to see the Fairbank Morse H16-66’s and the Baldwins. Are gone now. Was also a 4-6-2 on display in the railyard. Joe
Algoma Central was absorbed by Wisconsin Central, and is now part of CN.
Folks travelling through da UP (or around Lake Superior) might also want to make sure Marquette’s on their itinerary. Forget the current name of the railroad, but there’s an ore dock there that still takes rail deliveries to load ore boats. While the dock and rail line are private property, there’s a public roadway that goes under the rail line and past the dock, plus a public park you can see the dock and rail line from.
Oh, and ya, people from Traverse are definitely trolls, eh?
LS&I. Been there, done that–may get back there, if time with in-laws permits.
Oh, and ya, you betcha.
