When people refuel their vehicles at the pump a gas tax is included in the total amount, which helps to pay for highway infrastructure. Do state and federal gas taxes apply to railroads when they refuel their locomotives with diesel, or are they exempt.
Not real sure, but I don’t think the railroads would pay to build the truckers highway. I do know there is exempt fuel for farmers or off road use. The railroads could pay some kind of tax for only railroad use.
After a long fight, the federal tax was dropped. You can’t say the same for states. Why those taxes could never be harnessed to section 200 funds for rail crossing improvements instead of just into the highway tax pool is a good reason to be wary of the truck lobby and certain politicians.
They don’t but they should, especially with all that public money being diverted for rail projects nationwide. Yeah, they’d just pass the cost on to the shippers like the truckers do, but better them than us.
