Just driving around last week and I seen a strange site, what looks like a end of track with a pile of around 20 railroad cross ties stacked on the rail. I was thinking this must be to stop a runnaway train, I took a better look and it was not the end of the line but some old dead track that had the street paved over a section. and a huge pile of track ties just down the roadbed, guess the railroad found a good use for some dead track and looks like a great chance to use some extra parts and model this idea

Ken,
I wonder how long those ties will last before some enterprising person carts them away.
RR ties are frequently used in landscaping and their price is going through the roof. Over the years I have layed over 500 ties myself whilst landscaping four different houses. Some of those ties were 12 and 14 foot switch ties – now that gets heavy for a person working alone.

they must have trucked these ties to that spot as the rail is abandoned,
looks like a good strech of track
I see some old track in somerville that may be revived for the new green line project
just looked odd to see a huge pile of ties in the city

They are re-doing a bunch of track near me. There was a pile of used ties the size of a football field and about 30-40’ high! Made my jaw drop when I saw it.(wish I had my camera)
Better be careful with old RR ties - if they’re old enough, they may contain creosote - a known carcinagen - even in California!![:O]
Yep. And they’re grinding them up and burning them in power plants. (go figure[%-)])
