Rails turning "Green"

Ballasted track a few days ago with a dilluted white glue/alcohol mix. Used the drug store variety for the alcohol. Now I noticed that one rail hase a green fungus/corrosion forming on the inside of the rail. Any suggetions?

First: Are you using brass rail? If brass, it’s corrosion and there will be more of it. Did you paint your rails/ties before ballasting?

Are you using brass rail or Nickel-Silver? Did you solder your track and use flux? Or acid core solder?

Nickle silver rail and used electronics solder. Rosin cored flux.

I have some old rail thats greenish, NS, corrosion.
Not really concerned about it unless it will affect electrical connections.
Flux is acidic to roughen up and clean the surface to make a solid solder connection.
If flux isnt totally removed it will accellerate corrosion and ruin electrical contacts.
Try a q-tip with alcohol and remove it.
I will have to de-weather my rail to make it useful…

Well I’m stumped [%-)]

Oxidized Nickel-Silver is conductive.
But to corrode over a few days like you described makes me think there was some sort of accelerator involved. Rosin core solder shouldn’t cause the problem. Better call the CSI lab.

I guess all you can do is clean it off the best you can and give it a wash of grimmy black or whatever to hide the green color.
