Railway Mergers

I heard a couple of rumours that I wanted to bounce off the inquiring minds here at trains.com.

One was that Canadian Pacific and Union Pacific were merging.

The other one was that the reason that Burlington Northern and Santa Fe merged was to block Canadian National from overtaking either one.

Any truth to the above two rumours?

No.

LC

I just love a man of few words…

Better look out LC…seems Mook has taken fancy to ya! [;)]

It’s ok - LC and I go back a long way…(back to when he had to explain his “handle” to me…)

Yeah, and he had to change his avatar too…

Shame, I kinda like the looks of his hobos![;)]

…Ed, I’ve been trying to figure out just what it is you are doing in your Avatar…Looks like a hose of some sort and believe you are at the end of a tank car…but puzzled as to what is the action…

Q I think he is washing his automobile. Some have been known to confuse that particular model of a vehicle with a tank car.[}:)]

I would not confuse Ed’s Magnum with a tank car. It looks like he’s at work on the end platform of a tank car with one hand firmly grasping the rail.

/adjusts glasses/ Paul I guess your are correct. Maybe I am the only one that would confuse a Magnum for a tank car.

I wouldn’t expect any big mergers in the near future. Just the thought of another merger and the potential meltdowns is enough to tighten most people up. I think one day we may see a UP-CP union of some sort though.

As far as the BN SF - CN thing goes…Robert Krebs came to the SF through the SPSF corp merge (ICC forced the corp to sell one of the railraods after the railroad merge was denied). He was the main man in the SF-BN merge and had his sights set on mergeing with CN also. They were all to become the North American Railway. But with the other botched mergers of that era the Surface Transportation Board put a moritorum on mergers and the CN din’t merge with BNSF. This of course upset Krebs because of all the mergers of the time the BN-SF merge was the only one that didn’t go really bad. I think this screwed up Kreb’s program so much he got discusted with the whole thing and retired (my opinion, I may be wrong).

A few months ago the BNSF and the CN were talking about merging. The reason that they decided not to was due to the fact the BNSF would not move there home office to Canada, and the CN would not move theres to Ft. Worth.
