There are hundreds, if not thousands, of train videos, yet there are practically no videos that focus on railyard operations. The only video I’ve seen is the Pentrex “Warehouse on Wheels” video from the 1980’s.
Why is that? Is it because the railroads are so security conscious that they don’t want video photographers on their property, or is it because there’s simply no market for videos related to railyard operations? I’d love to see some videos of a handful of modern yards.
I can’t speak to the availability of yard ops video, but I would suggest that most people would rather watch mainline trains fly by on the high iron than watch a lowly switcher kick cars endlessly, or see car after car roll down the hump.
Not that yard operations aren’t worthy of attention, but… (Sorry, Ed)
May I recommend letters to the major RR video producers to see if that’s something that’s on their radar?
The video “Warehouse on Wheels” has been marketed by Pentrex, but it was produced by Wild Rose Productions. The video Railfreight Holland vol 1 by FHP Audiovisual has a nice section on the operation of Kijfhoek Yard in Holland which is probably the most modern humpyard in the world. The yard has three sets of retarders (most have only two), plus car mules for automatic bowl trimming.
I have some older videos originally published by the New York Central Public Relations Department in the 40’s. One is called the Freight Yards, the other is the Steam Locomotive. These were both put out by Video Rails in San Diego. I don’t think they’re still in business (under that name at least). They must be older videos because the back of the box says they’re available in VHS or Beta.
