Raising Cane: my influences

I don’t know about anyone else, but I like to incorporate influences from places I have been in my models. I intend to redecorate an engine or two to represent an Australian cane tram, one of the 2 foot gauge sugar trains that were once so common in Queensland. Here’s my influences:

That’s me on the Eudlo in 1983.

Here’s the Eudlo today, in the museum in Nambour.

They also have a two foot gauge Shay, named”Shay”. It was kitbashed in 1948 from the best parts of two previous Shay’s.

These are my influences. I’ll show my work when I make progress.

I had not realized how very different the detail construction of a ‘license-built’ Shay would be.

There were two previous Shay’s, the “ Dulong” from 1908, and the “ Mapleton” from 1914. These came new from Lima, and there are pictures of them ready for shipment. Builder’s photos at Lima. They were rebuilt in 1948 from the best parts of each engine at the Morton Central Sugar Mill in Nambour. This is why Shay has 2 builder’s plates.
The sugar mill in Nambour closed in 2003, and fortunately these engines have a home at the museum there.

That’s a most imaginative name…

They named their locos after growing districts, except for Shay. It was built from parts from Dulong and Mapleton. Previous Shay’s.

Yes, quite literally “ welcome to my world”. Adding bits and pieces of every railroad experience one has ever had… It’s a fun concept.

Including things that have a meaning to us; places we’ve traveled, people we’ve lost, and anything else with meaning. It’s very custom to our own experiences. And valid to include in a layout.

Here’s “ Moreton”. It is Moreton Central Sugar Mill’s first steam loco, built by Krause in 1901. It is currently running at the Yandina Ginger Factory , in Yandina. I am currently repainting an LGB Zillertal engine to resemble an engine from the Moreton Mill. The Zillertal was also built by Krause in 1900, and looks similar, more is less…..

I have plans to repaint a side rod diesel also in a sugar cane livery.

I recommend you do a version of Porta’s LVM800, complete with ‘biomasa’ on the bunker. An introduction of sorts here:

Good info! But mostly I am trying to represent things I have seen, and places I have been. Just a couple of engines will probably be enough. I was trying to build something that looked like the “ Eudlo”. Although Eudlo was a Fowler, and this engine was built by Krauss. But Moreton was a Krauss, so almost like a little of each….
Not building precise models, just trying to capture the flavor of the Australian sugar operations…

I love it!! Prototypes and imagination!!! I have always wanted a narrow gauge mallet so i took a LGB zillertal tank and made my own…its not perfect prototype but it runs great and captures the basics. Im still in the process of detailing it.

Thanks! I have a diesel I am currently working on. It has become a much bigger project. I’ll have some pictures when I get it running.

I got my side rod diesel back together. I gave it a paint scheme to represent a sugar cane diesel, which are usually very loud colors. Not a depiction of any mill in particular, just an artistic license impression.
