rapido GMD 1 left or front right side

i saw on the model of the gmd1 it has front left on the engineers side at the front of the long hood would it not be the right hand side? rambo1…

Is there an F on both sides of the long hood? If the unit is operated long hood forward then there should be an F on both sides.

IMO if there is only one F somebody forgot one of them.

I can only see a F on the engineers side at the front of the long hood.

how do they determing which side is left or right?

I’m not sure I know exactly which end of a GMD1 is supposed to be the front. Looking at the following site, http://www.rapidotrains.com/gmd1class.html#nar, I have to scroll all the way down to unit 1082 before I see an F that I can distinguish and it is on the left side of the short hood.

Some of the other pictures show what appears to be an FR on the right side of the long hood.

Whichever end is the front, I’m still of the opinion that both sides of that end should have an F.

The side with the control stand is the right side.

Note that it also depends on the railway. For the GMD-1, NAR had the front as the short hood, so the F should show up on the short end.

when they were built between 1958 and 1960 they operated long hood forward, when they were rebuilt in 1988 they were given short hood forward capabilities.

That said, while they are a uniquely Canadian locomotive. I am considering picking one up to paint for a fictional railway.

Dunno if Canada has the same rules, but it’s required in the US to have one end designated the front, even if the loco has dual controls and can be operated either way. Many of the pictures of the prototype show them in pretty beat up or dirsty states, on the fresh painted ones you can see they have something in the corner. The model picture, well, I guess it’s been said enough, it’s a preproduction sample, which is when they (hopefully) catch the mistakes and get them fixed before the final production run, so appearance may vary.

The small “FR” in the picture (where the yellow frame stripe ends, near the steps) means “Front Right”. Canadian engines don’t just have the “F” for “Front”, they mark all four corners. IIRC F is front and R is rear, then below that L for Left and R for Right.

As noted, CN engines run long-hood forward, the Northern Alberta Railway ones are short-hood forward.
