I have ordered two of Rapidos Royal Hudsons. One is 2850 with the Royal blue paint job, I am hoping to figure out who makes the proper 12 (I think) coaches that make up the train and paint them the Royal blue as well. They also had a stainless strip down the side.
The second is 2861, an oil burner that ran between Vancouver and Revelstoke.
So to those that have or will be ordering one (or more) which one(s) will you be ordering?
Brent, I already have the streamlined Sunset brass 2-10-4 T1-c Selkirk that is highly similar to the Hudson H1-e in appearance. I prefer to place an order for the H1-b version of which the famous 2816 is one. That’s still 18 months or so off. I would also like a 4-6-2 if it is ever produced.
Very tempted by Southerm 2839, and for the same reason I have a Sunset T&P 610 (and crave a Key excursion service 2-8-4 and an Empire Midland 4501): “I remember when I was a boy…”
Crandell, I wish I had the patience to have waited for the Selkirk. I had put a deposit down for one and got tired of the delays, so I spent the deposit on a BLI loco instead. There are sometimes new in the box ones at local train shows, however, at this point, I will see if I am still kicking when Jason comes out with his and go from there.
I ordered the Hudson with the Royal blue trim. After the cross Canada visit was over in 1939, it went on a bit of a tour to the U.S. My tour will be never-ending.[(-D] I wonder how many will be wanting the “Royal” version.
If you are modestly flush with hobby money for now, Brent, I believe Scott still has four Selkirks left at Sunset. [:-^]
Maybe I won’t move to Comox, it sounds like there are a lot of trouble makers over there.[(-D]
I think forking out $1400.00 for two will make me keep my head low for a while. [:-^] Although the wife did throw $500.00 in cash at me after she gave me the evil eyeball when I told her I had to put a deposit down.[:D] She had just sold something and it saved her going to the bank.
Is this locomotive made of brass? and also the Selkirk, or plastic??
The Sunset, yes, but Jason’s products from Rapido are all metal frame and plastic shells (AFAIK). Even so, they are truly outstanding, second to none in terms of R&D, engineering, materials, and eventual production items.
Crandell, how do you think Rapidos Selkirk will compare. Sunsets are almost double the price, are they worth it? My plan is to get at least two of all the Rapido C.P. steam Loco’s as they come out. I still want the Sunset Selkirk though, so maybe one of each is in order.
Brent, I can’t answer your question, certainly not having seen a production model of the Rapido version…yet. I can say with a great deal of confidence that Rapido’s version will be every bit as good, just not brass. The way Jason is driven to provide highly detailed models, I don’t think you can help but be very pleased when you finally get your hands on one.
It will be interesting to get the Sunset and Rapido side by side and pull out the magnifying glass and do some running comparisons. I will be a rivet counter for a day.[(-D]
