Rare Diesal Seen And A Scream From AC6000

I found this video on YouTube posted by the account of BNSF7488. I think this is a rare catch of Warbonnet Scheme because it’s a SD75M. I like the horn. What type of horn is that? Also look at the clean BNSF GEVO. Also if you notice it’s the Oldest Scheme First, The Old Scheme Second and the Newset scheme last in these engines. This is not my video but I thought this was an awesome catch because you don’t see these engines anymore. This guy is flying by probably at 50-60 MPH. Also I found another video from the same person. A CSX AC6000. I have a question about these engines. What makes the scream in engines when they go by at speed because I’ve seen quiet a bit of these engines in my life but why do they have a screaming sound when they go by? Maybe it’s of the AC running in the traction motors. Just tell me why?

  1. Here’s the video of the SF Warbonnet http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gOM7b_5JxA

  2. Here’s the video of the CSX AC6000 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_7BMnCXQfk

  3. Bonus video. How fast is this guy going? I say 70 MPH http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vryWQIQCOBw

  4. Another Bonus. What type of horn is this it’s weird? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcXBVjh2xQ8

Tell me what video number is the one your talking about? Example, Number 3 Video is 70 MPH.

Actually, the “weird” no. 4 reminds me of the diesel-electric air horns of my youth (1960s - 1970s). IIRC diesel locomotive horns evolved from the bass tone (think early Super Chief, blatt-blatt), with a couple of horns added, like these, that are much higher in pitch, and dissonant.

No. 1 to me is the modern “glam” sound of BNSF. I expect it requires five or six horns.

But there are folks here with perfect pitch and perfect knowledge so I hope the experts will give you a better explanation. - a.s.

Al,

What does IIRC mean? I see that used a lot on here and cant think of anything it would stand for…

Sorry. IIRC = If I recall correctly;

not to be confused with AFAIK = As far as I know. - a.s.

I’m only making an semi-educated guess but I have stood trackside with CSX AC60CW’s going by and they def. howl like banshees, even at lower speed. I know that as built they had the twin turbo HDL engines and I wonder if it’s that may account for it (i.e turbochargers are loud and in the case of the AC60’s it’s X 2). The HDL was also a higher reving engine than the FDL so maybe that is a factor as well. I have not been near one since CSX and GE starting re-engining them with the 16 cyl. version of the GEVO engine so I don’t know if there is a noise difference.
