Rare NW5 locomotive to be scrapped

Instead of scrapping them they should be put into museums.

It is a shame to see it cut up, but how much better is it for the thing to rot away in some under-funded museums back lot?

Would it not be possible to find the copper thieves and scrap them!

Too bad it can’t be saved. I cleaned, serviced and helped move the unit as BN 987 in the mid-70s. I was the only NW-5 assigned to the Pacific Division.

It’s a shame this unit is to be scrapped, but many of the railroad museums in the U.S. are decades behind in their preservation efforts.
It should be noted that 3 others remain, one in a museum and two in active service. Start working now to make sure they turn into survivors.

Why not restore it and put it in the Oregon Rail Heritage Association?

Always my favorite. Grew up watching her sister, #186, work the GN “Hutch Line”. Worked my home town of Lester Prairie, MN mid morning on it’s way to Hutchinson and again mid afternoon on return.

Can’t save them all.

Nice photos

Many are saved at other locations, and as said before you can not save them all. Interesting idea find the copper thieves, and more importantly the scrap dealer they sold to. Both should be punished. Listening to the description, not much left, so really probably too much to save/rebuild.

I never understood why these locomotives were so hated. They were a NW2 with bloomberg trucks and a short hood. You think shortlines and industries would have fought over them. If I had this unit, a stripped hulk, and a perfectly working emd switcher, as they have stated, I would canabalize the switcher and fix the NW5. More useful locomotive. Same thing with the RS1, you would think a used RS1 would have been more popular than the S2/S4.
Second thing I have issue with is it is better to scrap than let sit rusting. Are you kidding? It is far better to exist as a hulk than not exist at all.

No reason that a rare locomotive should be scrapped eventhough it’s just a shell. I hope the copper thieves will be caught and be locked up for a very long time.
